The History of Gift Giving
The tradition of gift giving goes back to the beginning of human time! From the caveman offering simple items to prove his dominance and ability to provide for a family, gift giving has evolved, especially since the 19th century when manufacturing made it possible for gifts to reach a wider audience at a lesser price.
Various cultures have added to our gift giving traditions. When ancient Egyptian Pharaohs were coronated into becoming gods it was considered their true day of birth and many gifts were given to them, thus beginning the tradition of birthday presents. Ancient Greeks believed that evil spirits tried to haunt loved ones on their birthdays. In addition to bringing gifts to keep the spirits at bay, they also blew out candles to protect the birthday person.
